LAUNCH: Art at Water Works Park      5/30/2015 9:00:00 AM
2201 George Flagg Parkway, Des Moines
The public is invited to LAUNCH: Art at Water Works Park on Saturday, May 30, for a riverside unveiling of a new, temporary public art installation that calls attention to the joy of reconnecting to our waterways. The featured speaker will be Iowa Department of Natural Resources Director Chuck Gibb. LAUNCH is a new annual event aimed at drawing new and current users into Water Works Park to explore its many recreational opportunities. The event will feature “The Village” in the Denman Woods area of the Park, which will host food and beverage vendors, user group booths, stage/music and entertainment. From the village attendees can join park user groups in other parts of the park for events whether it be the river art unveiling, an ultimate Frisbee game, a birding tour, walking/running tour, paddling, cycling, yoga, drum circle, kite flying, etc. We will have a posted schedule in advance and in The Village. Each year the event will prominently feature one new “launch.” This year’s launch is a public art installation by New York-based artist Mary Mattingly, whose work will invite residents to rediscover Des Moines’ river- town roots and re-imagine what is possible for the region’s creeks and rivers. Notably, the event will launch two major regional efforts celebrating our rivers: · The launch of a regional water trails plan aimed at developing a roadmap for enhancing citizen experiences in and along the urban waterways. More information at: www.dmampo.org. · The launch of Phase 1 implementation of the Water Works Park Master Plan. More information at: www.waterworkscircuit.com. The public art work and the event is funded by the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation, Des Moines Water Works Park Foundation, and the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.
