Mr. Blank Day      7/27/2015 12:00:00 AM
515-241-6472
1200 Pleasant St., Des Moines
Compassion, generosity – and fun – have been a part of Blank Children’s from the very beginning. In fact, we wouldn’t be here without these very special gifts! The year was 1944…Bing Crosby topped the pop charts ... a loaf of bread cost a dime ... President Roosevelt was elected to his fourth term of office ... and A.H. and Anna Blank made an extraordinary gift to build the first-ever children’s hospital in the State of Iowa. The Blank’s own son Raymond died at the young age of 33, and he had dedicated his short life to showing his compassion for others by bringing joy into the lives of youngsters in need. So it was only fitting the Blank family created the hospital in his name: the Raymond Blank Memorial Hospital for Children. The Blank family also carried forward Raymond’s passion to help kids with a commitment to give them more than medicine to heal: they would bring young patients that critical element—fun—to bring joy into their lives and help heal their body as well as their spirit. Using their connections in the theater industry, they arranged for Disney ® artists to paint murals at the hospital and hosted movie star visits with patients. Most memorably, A.H. Blank would celebrate his own birthday, with children at the hospital, a tradition that still marks every July 27 here as “Mr. Blank Day.” It is with this same spirit of generosity that we ask our community to join us in continuing Mr. Blank’s legacy and help us celebrate Mr. Blank Day 2015 by helping children and families in need of support. To help tell the story of the Blank family’s generosity – as well as the amazing stories of the kids and families we treat at Blank Children’s each and every day – we will be hosting an online celebration of “Mr. Blank Day” on July 27 that will highlight fun stories about the Blank family - and Des Moines in the 1940's - as well as current programs helping kids at Blank Children’s today. Visit www.blankchildrens.org/celebratemrblank for details, and be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter: #BeLikeMrBlank.
