Elvin McDonald, a veteran garden editor and author for national garden magazines and books, was honored with a daffodil named for him to celebrate his retirement later this month as garden educator and ambassador for the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. The daffodil, bred by well-known bulb connoisseurs Brent and Becky Heath of Gloucester, Va., is called Elvin's Voice and will be available at the botanical garden's Fall Bulb Mart in September. McDonald, formerly director of Friends of the Des Moines Botanical Center in 2008, was instrumental in rallying people to support the aging facility and created many popular programs and attractions.
