Wine Spectator magazine had high praise for three wines from Calcareous Vineyard of California, which is owned by Des Moines native Dana Brown. Wine Spectator, which reviews wines and has been ranked as a top publication, ranked the three wines as outstanding, just one rating under the top rating of classic. Here’s what the publication had to say about the wines.

Moose Paso Robles, 2009, $42, rated 92

“Outstanding, a wine of superior character and style. ... Intense, with rich road tar, graphite, dried dark berry, cedar and crushed rock. This is expansive, gaining depth and nuance on the finish, where the tannins are firm. Drink now through 2024.”

Syrah Paso Robles, 2009, $36, rated 92

“Pure and elegant, offering vivid raspberry and spicy blackberry and huckleberry flavors that show touches of fresh earth and underbrush. Drink now through 2022.”

Tres Violet, 2009, $38, rated 90

“Offers a complex mix of road tar, blackberry and cranberry flavors that are tight and vibrant, firming on the finish where the tannins have a gravely taste and texture. Drink now through 2022.”
