Three Central Iowa nonprofits are among those that will receive $260,000 today from The Walmart Foundation and its Iowa State Giving Program. Among the five nonprofits receiving the awards, local groups include:

  • Central Iowa Shelter & Services - $25,000 to assist with its community kitchen program that delivers more than 90,000 meals per year to sites across the Des Moines metro area.

  • Food Bank of Iowa - $75,000 plus an additional $50,000 Walmart Associate Choice award to fund its Red to Green program aimed at distributing more food to relieve the hungry in Iowa.

  • Iowa Workforce Development Foundation - $30,000 to assist with its Skilled Iowa program that provides Iowa residents access to job education and training.

The Walmart Foundation looks for organization that address the needs of the communities they serve and make a significant social impact, according to a news release. The check presentation will be held today at Walmart, 1001 73rd St. in Windsor Heights. Those attending the event include Gov. Terry Branstad and Rep. Chris Hagenow.
