Children with disabilities in Greater Des Moines soon will have a place to play in league sports at their own pace. A new nonprofit, Courage League Sports, will begin offering programs this spring at the Waukee Family YMCA. Founded by Melissa Clarke-Wharff, a former food service director for Aramark, Courage League Sports already has raised more than $100,000 toward a $300,000 goal and has plans to move into its own facility later this year. "Having a child with a disability brings many challenges," said Clarke-Wharff, who has a son and a daughter with physical disabilities. "One of the greatest might be finding opportunities for a kid that loves sports to be able to play." Early donors to the organization include Blank Children's Hospital, the JMH Foundation and ChildServe. For more information about volunteering or becoming a sponsor, visit www.courageleaguesports.org.
