In honor of National Volunteer Week, United Way of Central Iowa surveyed 85 local businesses to gauge their commitment to volunteer service for their employees. The businesses surveyed employ about 67,000 people. Among the key findings are:
- 94 percent of businesses contacted identified an active interest in encouraging employees to volunteer.
- Most of the local businesses allow their staff to volunteer during the workday.
- A majority of businesses surveyed said they frequently use volunteer activity as team building and professional development opportunities.
- The top annual volunteer events include Meals for the Heartland, Habitat for Humanity, and Trash Bash, as well as United Way volunteer activities like Day of Action, the Stuff the Bus children's book drive and Reach Out to Dropouts.
United Way hosts a volunteer website, listing hundreds of volunteer opportunities for local nonprofits.
