The founders of Outreach Inc., which in July became the 5,000th winner of the Point of Light Award, were honored last night by Gov. Terry Branstad at a reception at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown. The award, which was created by former President George H.W. Bush, is given to individuals and organizations who spark change to improve the world. Outreach is a nonprofit founded by Floyd Hammer and Kathy Hamilton of Union, Iowa. Its mission is to provide safe water, food and medical care to children in Tanzania by purchasing handcrafted baskets made by women in that country. They then ship the baskets to churches and other organizations to be sold on consignment. Outreach was previously honored in a July 15 ceremony at the White House with Bush and President Barack Obama.
