DART puts the brakes on expansion, for now

There has been a lot of talk in town about adding bus rapid transit, or new passenger shelters, or more bus routes that get you across large parts of the metro without stopping downtown. But those aren't included in the budget approved recently by the commission governing the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority, or DART. The commission managed to keep the property tax even in the next budget year by using $433,000 in federal funding for the operating budget that normally would have been used for capital expenses. "While community feedback has indicated a need for additional transit service, this plan does not add additional service due to funding constraints," DART said in a report on the commission meeting.
