The city of Des Moines is considering naming a new playground at Ewing Park after Ashley Oakland, the real estate agent who shot to death in April 2011. Oakland was a former Young Variety board member who was dedicated to making sure children had opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. A public hearing is scheduled for 5 p.m. Aug. 27 at Des Moines City Hall to take comments. Young Variety and Variety - The Children's Charity of Iowa approached the city's park and recreation department with a proposal to build a new playground that could be used by children with special needs. The city does not have a playground specifically designed for special-needs children. Variety asked that the playground be named the Ashley Okland Star Playground.
