Des Moines has been selected as the next meeting site for President Barack Obama's Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience, city officials announced. The 26-member panel, which includes Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie along with 13 other mayors, eight governors and tribal officials, will meet May 14 at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates. This will be the third meeting for the task force, which previously met at the White House and at Los Angeles City Hall. The task force is charged with overhauling federal grant programs and identifying funding sources to better address climate change-related disasters such as droughts, wildfires, floods and storms. Apre-event meeting May 13 will feature presentations on local environmental issues and initiatives, with breakout sessions and recommendations from local leaders. In 2012 alone, the costs of weather disasters exceeded $110 billion in the United States.
