Scammers posing as Microsoft tech support

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller is warning Iowans about a scam in which people are being contacted by criminals posing as Microsoft Corp. technical support employees seeking access to their computers and personal information. The callers attempt to persuade recipients to download software that may appear to be useful, but is malicious.
Criminals have also requested credit card information or have directed recipients to fraudulent websites to enter credit card or other personal information, according to Miller.
Neither Microsoft nor its partners make unsolicited telephone calls to charge customers for computer security or software fixes, Microsoft said in an advisory on its website.
` Individuals who believe they may have been targeted through computer malware should change their email and financial account passwords, use anti-virus software to scan and fix problems and report the scam to Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
