The Greater Des Moines Partnership is pushing for businesses to shift 5 percent of their spending to Central Iowa vendors, a move that could generate an additional $1 billion of economic impact locally. Each year, the Partnership said in a press release, area businesses spend more than $13.4 billion with out-of-area suppliers. Through the "Look Local First" initiative, the Partnership is aiming to raise awareness about the advantages of buying from local businesses. "We hope to not only improve the bottom line for businesses in the metro, but to create a sustainable future for our community," said Meg Fitz, senior vice president of regional business development for the Partnership, in a press release. Businesses that pledge to shift 5 percent of their current out-of-area purchases to area businesses and services will be featured on a new LookLocalDSM.com website. This campaign replaces a similar campaign called "Buy into the Circle," a partnership spokesperson said.
