Iowa's unemployment rate rose to
4.4 percent in May from 4.3 percent in April, Iowa Workforce Development said
today. The state's jobless rate was 4.8 percent one year ago. By
comparison, U.S. unemployment rate remained at 6.3 percent in May. The
number of unemployed Iowans increased to 74,100 in May from 73,500 in April.
Most of the increased hiring over the year has occurred in leisure and
hospitality (4,700), construction (4,600) and trade and transportation (4,500).
Employment in manufacturing and finances has weakened, according to a
release, but remain up 1,800 and 900 jobs, respectively, over the year.
