Already this week, Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement had its petition to improve regulation of hog confinements in Iowa tossed by the state panel charged with regulating the farms, the Iowa Environmental Protection Commission. Now the inspector general at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that the EPA has for 11 years failed to find a way to measure emissions from hog confinements, which means it can’t properly regulate them. “Until the EPA develops sound methods to estimate emissions, the agency cannot reliably determine whether animal feeding operations comply with applicable Clean Air Act requirements,” the study found. Read more
