CoOportunity Health announced today that its portfolio of health plans has been certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Certification as qualified health plans means the plans are ready to be marketed on the Iowa Health Insurance Marketplace for individuals and the SHOP Marketplace for small businesses beginning Oct. 1. "We're thrilled we will be offering competitive health plans statewide for Iowa individuals and businesses on the Marketplace, as well as in the open market through traditional sales channels," CEO David Lyons said in a press release. The West Des Moines-based nonprofit health insurance cooperative will be one of six health plans on the Iowa online exchange. Launched in early 2012, the nonprofit was initially funded by a $112 million low-interest federal loan under provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act designed to spur more competition in state health insurance markets.
