The 2013 Principal Charity Classic broke a record Tuesday when organizers revealed the event would donate a record $1.03 million to local children's charities. This is the first time donations have surpassed the million-dollar mark in a single year, according to a media release. Since its inception in 2007, the tournament has raised more than $5 million for local charities. "We're very grateful to our 300 sponsors, the 81 Champions Tour players who participated in this year's tournament, the more than 73,000 fans who attended and the 1,200-plus volunteers who helped make it all possible. Thanks to everyone's support, The Principal Charity Classic will help thousands of children in need right here in central Iowa," Larry Zimpleman, chairman, president and CEO of The Principal Financial Group, said in the release. The reveal was done at a special event Tuesday at Wakonda Club in Des Moines. Donations are focused on philanthropic giving for five designated "FORE Our Kids" charities including Blank Children's Hospital, Bravo Greater Des Moines, Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, United Way of Central Iowa, and Variety - The Children's Charity of Iowa.
