Unemployment in Iowa and the
Greater Des Moines area continued to drop in March, according to statistics
released Friday morning by Iowa Workforce Development. Statewide unemployment
finally dipped below 5 percent to 4.9 percent. That's half a percentage point
lower than it was a year ago. About half the nation's states saw unemployment
decline in March, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. U.S.
unemployment is at 7.6 percent. In Greater Des Moines, total employment grew
from 325,600 employed people in February to 327,200 workers in March. That
represents a 1.8 percent increase in employment from March 2012.
