Johnston voters say no to bonds for new schools

A majority of voters in the Johnston school district on Tuesday voted for a $51 million bond referendum to build more schools, but it was not enough to meet the 60 percent supermajority the bond issue needed to pass. The school board now must decide whether to have another election in six months, to abandon expansion plans or to use other ways to finance them. Because of growth, some elementary schools are overcrowded.
