Executives from Des Moines Area Community College and the YMCA of Greater Des Moines today announced plans to explore a new YMCA and student activities complex to be located on the college's Ankeny campus.
The $23 million project was approved Monday night by the DMACC Board of Directors. The YMCA of Greater Des Moines board will consider the project later this summer.
According to a news release, the facility will include a proposed YMCA connecting Buildings 4 and 5 and renovations to include a food court, bookstore, student activity space, classrooms and study areas. RDG Planning & Design in Des Moines has been chosen as project architect.
The proposed facility will likely resemble the YMCA in Waukee, the release said.
The suburb's current YMCA is located in Ankeny's Northview Middle School. Dave Gieseke, marketing and public relations manager with YMCA of Greater Des Moines, said its unclear at this point whether the proposed new facility would replace the existing one should the project be approved by the YMCA board.
Vernon Delpesce, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines, said in the release that the new location will provide an opportunity to better serve its members throughout Ankeny and surrounding areas.
"We need a bigger, more modern facility to meet the growing needs of Ankeny," Delpesce said . "We envision this state-of-the-art health and wellness center to serve many audiences. It will be a showcase facility."
