Children at six Des Moines schools will learn firsthand about growing fruits and vegetables and healthful eating through a $16,600 grant from the Wellmark Foundation. The foundation awarded the grant to the Midwest regional office of the National Center for Appropriate Technology to implement a program that seeks to address childhood obesity by fostering scholastic food environments that emphasize fresh fruits and vegetables and by providing sustainable, garden-based education. Moulton, Carver, Smouse, Hillis, Cowles and Goodrell schools were chosen.
