Iowa Methodist Medical Center has been re-verified as a Level I adult trauma center, the highest designation, by the American College of Surgeons. Methodist operates as one of just two Level I trauma centers in the state, and the only one in Central Iowa. In addition, Blank Children's Hospital has been verified as a Level II pediatric trauma center. Blank Children's Hospital is one of three trauma centers with a Level II pediatric designation in Iowa. A trauma center is a hospital that has additional resources, staff and equipment to help care for severely injured patients. Receiving care at a Level I trauma center for severe or life-threatening injuries lowers a person's risk of death by 25 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
