Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller announced he has joined 42 other attorneys general in voicing strong support for the Federal Trade Commission's efforts to investigate so-called patent trolls. In a letter to FTC Secretary Donald Clark, state officials expressed optimism that a nationwide investigation announced by the agency in October will assist with future federal and state law enforcement efforts. The proposed investigation would arm consumer protection authorities with valuable intelligence as they escalate actions against abusers of the patent system. Patent trolls acquire patents solely to make baseless claims of patent infringement and to extract fees or settlements from consumers.
