Christie Vilsack will present a $50,000 check today from The Vilsack Foundation to Reach Out and Read Iowa. The donation will be used to incorporate books and literacy guidance into every well-child visit at Blank Children's Hospital for children 6 months through 5 years of age. Vilsack was instrumental in establishing Reach Out and Read Iowa during her time as Iowa's first lady; the first Reach Out and Read program in Iowa began at Blank Children's Hospital in 1998 and now the program has 86 Iowa sites that serve 55,000 children.
