Des Moines Police Chief Judy Bradshaw announced last week that she will retire from the department in October. She will become assistant director of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. Bradshaw said she hopes her successor will be chosen from within the department. "Our department has never had a stronger field of internal candidates who are talented and qualified to lead our fine organization," she said. Bradshaw leads the largest police department in the state, with 379 sworn officers and 110 civilian support staff. She became chief in 2007.
