Until a few years ago, Daniel Beyer’s aim was to become a store director with Hy-Vee Inc., a company he had worked for since he was 16.
Mentor: Dale Groh, owner/director of sales and marketing, Kabel Business Services
He enjoys running and ran the Des Moines Marathon two years ago.
“Then I got married and realized that it was too many hours to be working when you have a wife,” he said.
Although Beyer didn’t have experience in business-to-business selling, Kabel Business Services co-owner Dale Groh recognized Beyer’s people skills and hired him in 2009 to sell payroll plans. “His attitude was, if you’re good with people, he could teach me how to sell payroll,” Beyer recalled. Because West Des Moines was his sales territory, it just made sense for him to become involved in that community.
A graduate of the West Des Moines Leadership Academy, Beyer serves on the board of the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce and has organized several events geared toward young professionals in Greater Des Moines. Last year he was named Young Professional of the Year by the Young Professionals Connection and the Greater Des Moines Partnership.
He married his college sweetheart, Kacey, after she graduated from Central College with a teaching degree. They have two daughters, Isabella, 3, and Tabitha, 1.
Each of his volunteer experiences has had evolved from a personal relationship. For instance, Beyer became involved with Amanda the Panda after a friend of his lost a child. He has volunteered for the semiannual Camp Amanda, a camp designed to help children and families who are grieving a loss.
Beyer also turned his love for bow ties into a charitable event for Variety – The Children’s Charity. The idea for the event began after he and a group of friends committed to wearing bow ties each Wednesday. The evening gala raised more than $6,000 for the organization. Beyer and his friends hope to raise $10,000 this year. “It was a ton of fun having a lot of friends who said they’d never be caught in a bow tie show up in one.”
Reasons he’s a Forty:
• Founded the Bow Tie Ball, a fundraising event that raised more than $6,000 in its first year for Variety – The Children’s Charity.
• Has served on the board of the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce since 2012 and has been active in fundraising and programming efforts.
• As vice chair of the chamber’s New View, he has organized several young professionals’ networking events and was a key partner in the first annual YP Leadership Symposium.
• He’s a partner in the Des Moines Area LinkedIn Socials, events that connect LinkedIn members through face-to-face networking.
