Tyler De Haan was in his junior year as a political science major at Northwestern College when an agent for New York Life Insurance Co. visited the campus and offered him an internship.

Mentor: Andy Turcotte, manager of division sales, Principal Financial Group Inc.
“I’m a history buff; I’ve always loved history, from Western civilization to American history,” he said. “I try to read as much as I can about history.”
“I realized this was an industry that fascinated me,” said De Haan, who joined Principal Financial Group after graduating. “I wanted to move to Des Moines because Central Iowa was buzzing and I had a lot of friends there.” De Haan and his wife, Stacie, have been married for six years and have a 9-month-old daughter, Isabelle.
At Principal, De Haan’s role is to present and sell the company’s financial products to advisers, which requires building trust.
For De Haan, who has been active with the Iowa Republican Party since college, the skills needed to successfully sell a financial product dovetail nicely with political acumen. He was elected as a delegate to both the 2010 and 2012 Republican state conventions, helped organize the 2012 Iowa caucuses in Dallas County and is now involved in 2014 caucus preparations.
“It’s interesting because in the political world you have to be able to communicate your ideas; it resonates in almost every industry,” he said.
Growing up in Storm Lake, De Haan learned early on from his father, an optometrist, and his mother, a music teacher, the importance of becoming involved in the community. In Greater Des Moines, he has organized numerous fundraising events for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society over the past several years. And in just the past four years since joining Waukee United Methodist Church, he has jumped into roles on its finance and building committees as the church completes a $4 million expansion. He uses his communications skills to serve as a worship leader as well.
As Waukee United’s pastor, the Rev. Jamie Cutler, put it, “Tyler’s warm personality, wonderful skills and gifts, generous heart and willingness to help truly make him a blessing to all those around him.”
Reasons he’s a Forty:
• Led a project to implement a new customer relationship management system for the entire Principal Funds sales team and was recognized with an award from Principal for his efforts
• Increased the efficiency of his sales territory by more than 100 percent from 2009 to 2012; increased sales over the past year by 20 percent
• Received a Master of Public Administration degree from Drake University and received certified financial planner and chartered financial consultant designations
• Serves his congregation at Waukee United Methodist Church in leadership positions on two committees and as a worship leader
