The Des Moines Register is asking to hang its shingle on the eighth floor of Capital Square, a move that is not allowed under current zoning in downtown Des Moines. According to a variance request that will be heard today by the city's Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Register would like either a 58.25-square-foot sign on the east facade of the building or a 132.5-square-foot sign on the north side. The Register will occupy the fourth and fifth floors of Capital Square. At present, tenants must reside on the first or second floors of a downtown building to display a sign. The Register plans to move its operations next month.
