If there’s one word that sums up JC Risewick, it would be “determined,” said Kyle Krause, one of a number of influential Greater Des Moines leaders who wrote letters of support for Risewick’s nomination as a Forty under 40. 

Through his determination, Risewick grew a completely new sales territory in southwest Minnesota to more than $500,000 in sales during his first three years working for the Seneca Cos. But that was just a warm-up for greater things to come. 

Risewick joined the Des Moines-based company, founded by his father, in 2006 as a field services representative after having worked as a recruiter in the software industry in Minnesota. He was promoted to general manager of the company’s industrial division in 2009 and implemented several programs that resulted in millions of dollars in additional sales for the division. He has also used his recruiting skills to hire some top application engineers for the division, which resulted in the division expanding its sales of automated paint finishing systems into 10 additional states. In July 2013, he was promoted to his current position as vice president of sales for the entire company. 

He credits his mentor, Murray Nelson, with giving him a lot of opportunities to succeed. “And he’s let me fail, which I’ve learned a lot more from and I really appreciate,” Risewick said. ”He’s just got a good business head on his shoulders; whenever I have a dilemma or situation, he has a way of helping me approach a situation without telling me how to do it.” 

Risewick said he’s always felt that having a successful business is just one piece of the equation. “You need to be successful within the community as well,” he said. “Having a family business allows you to serve your community.”  Among the organizations that Risewick supports through financial contributions and his time are ChildServe, Muscular Dystrophy Association and Young Variety – The Children’s Charity.

Reasons he’s a Forty:

• He’s a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization and will serve as network chair in 2015 for the Iowa chapter.

• In May 2013, he completed the Minnesota Management Institute, a  program for high-potential managers offered by the Carlson School of Management through the University of Minnesota.

• He completed the Dale Carnegie Sales Advantage Program in 2004 and went on to become a certified trainer for the program in 2007.

• He earned a captain’s license through the U.S. Merchant Marine for one of his first jobs – piloting a charter boat in southwest Florida for one winter season – and has taught hundreds of kids how to sail as an instructor for the Clear Lake Yacht Club Sailing School.
