Each year, the Business Record honors a member of a previous Forty under 40 class to recognize that person’s contributions since being named a Forty. This year, that alumnus is Michael Sadler, assistant vice president of public policy and government affairs for CenturyLink Inc.

Sadler was a 2005 Forty under 40 honoree, along with Chet Culver, then Iowa secretary of state, and Chick Herbert, who was with Wells Fargo Financial. At that time, Sadler, 38, was director of policy and law for CenturyLink, which was then Qwest Communications International Inc. He had worked his way up in the company from sales consultant and he already had a string of community service achievements.

Sadler is still with CenturyLink, where he leads the company’s advocacy efforts at the city, state and federal levels of government. Since then, he’s added even more community and professional achievements.

Being named a Forty “creates a greater sense of duty,” he said. “You’re on this list with all these great people, so you don’t want to be considered a slacker.”

In nominating Sadler as Alumnus of the Year, Brent Aamoth, a friend who worked with Sadler at CenturyLink  wrote that Sadler “has shown a long history of success in business, stays plugged in to the community, contributes personal time back to the community, and balances involvement with his family at the same time. Many people ‘talk the talk’ but Michael is one who doesn’t waste time talking, but prefers to ‘walk the walk’!”

Aamoth said Sadler generally flies under the radar, getting things done behind the scenes and without a lot of fanfare. He may not call attention to his achievements, but others notice them. In 2012, he received Simpson College’s  “Double S” award, given to former Simpson athletes who have
achieved career success.

He currently serves as chair of the Central Iowa Workforce Investment Board. Sadler has served as chair of the Iowa Business Council’s Deputy Committee, and has served on the boards of the Iowa Taxpayers Association and the Iowa Association of Business and Industry.

Sadler also was honored in 2009 as the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation “Iowan of the Day.” Sadler has an M.B.A. from Upper Iowa University.

He will be honored at the Business Record Forty Under 40 event on March 11.
