Retail establishments in Iowa collected and paid $2.08 billion in state sales tax in fiscal 2013, according to an annual report released Wednesday by the Iowa Department of Revenue. The cumulative sales tax collected in the past fiscal year represents a 0.75 percent increase from the total dollar amount collected in the previous fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2012. Total taxable sales in the state reached $34.8 billion in the latest year, which ended June 30, 2013, up from $34.5 billion in taxable sales the previous fiscal year. The aggregate number of quarterly returns filed increased by 0.5 percent in fiscal 2013, to 345,787 returns statewide.
