Principal Financial Group Inc. unveiled a video to support gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youths at an employee event Tuesday.

The video, which is part of the national "It Gets Better Project," features three Principal employees who are part of the LGBT community sharing their personal stories and assuring LGBT youths that as they get older, life will get easier.

Betsy Bernard, past president of AT&T Corp. and a member of Principal's board of directors since 2001, attended the event and shared her personal observations and experiences as an openly gay woman in corporate America.

The video is part of a larger effort by Principal's GLBTA Employee Resource Group to create allies - both gay and straight - within the company who are willing to help play a key role in helping diverse groups feel welcomed and respected at work. View the video.

Blog on supportive LGBT workplace:

Nora Everett, senior vice president at Principal and a co-chair of Principal's diversity council, was on hand to share her experiences and why as a straight woman she has taken up the challenge of making the work environment an inclusive one for everyone.

She spoke about her experiences and talked about why it's not only the right thing to do, but also spoke to the business case for fostering an open environment for LGBT employees.

Everett wrote a blog post detailing her thoughts. The piece is titled "It gets better when companies - and their employees - get it." Read the blog
