Adel-based Kuder Inc. recently forged a partnership with an international career development policy group. It does business around the globe and is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

But if you’ve never heard of Kuder, you might not be alone. Last year, the Greater Des Moines Partnership recognized the company with its Best Kept Secret award.

Using evidence-based assessments, Kuder provides education and career planning guidance for students and adults. The company helps people figure out what their skills and interests are as they relate to career clusters, and then helps them figure out the path to a career. The service is designed to help students in high school as well as working adults.

Often what happens, said company president Phil Harrington, is that students will go to college, or in some cases graduate school, without knowing what they want to do or can do with their degree.

Kuder in January announced a collaborative partnership with the International Centre for Career Development and Public Policy (ICCDPP), which develops policy in the area of career planning. Its executive board is made up of government officials and international experts from eight countries.

Harrington thinks that his research-based company can help the international organization to develop and advance policy. He said Kuder is the only career guidance company to have such a partnership with the International Centre.

The most noteworthy byproduct of the partnership to date is that ICCDPP’s international symposium will come to the United States in 2015. The symposium, which aims to build dialogue between career guidance policymakers in the fields of education and business as well as researchers and business leaders, attracted 127 representatives from 31 countries in 2011. The symposium has never been held in the United States.

Kuder also will open the first ICCDPP office located in the United States.

“People ask me if I think partnering with ICCDPP will help us gather new business,” Harrington said. “And I say, ‘It already has.’”

The Adel company now has a partnership with the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, which reached out to Kuder to create a career advisement program.
