It was not a good week for bricks-and-mortar chain stores, CNNMoney.com reported. RadioShack Corp. announced Monday it will close up to 1,100 stores, or 20 percent of its North America locations. Staples Inc. on Thursday announced it will close 225 stores. Meanwhile, J.C. Penney Co. Inc. is downsizing, Sears Holdings Corp. is closing its flagship Chicago store as well as 500 Sears and Kmart locations, and Macy's Inc. is closing five stores. The article examines whether the obituary is being written for bricks-and-mortar stores, but one expert, Michael Niemira, vice president of research for the International Council of Shopping Centers, was quoted as saying there's no reason to worry. "What we're seeing is a continuation of a transition to a new, leaner industry that will continue," he said.
