CenturyLink Inc. yesterday reported a second-quarter net income of $74 million, or 12 cents per share. That was down from $115 million, or 19 cents per share, in the second quarter of 2011.

Operating revenues for the quarter were $4.61 billion, compared with $4.41 billion a year ago.

Operating expenses increased to $3.92 billion from $3.67 billion in the second quarter of 2011.

Excluding special items, which include acquisitions of Qwest Communications International Inc. and Savvis Inc., the company reported an adjusted earnings per share of 65 cents, down from 69 cents a year ago.
