The foundation awarded a total of $824,805 to the 13 recipients for local wellness and prevention projects with an emphasis on promoting active living and built environment and increasing access to and consumption of nutritious foods. Among the 13 project awards is $75,000 in matching funds to United Way of Central Iowa to implement “Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0,” an obesity prevention initiative for children. The program, to be launched in four elementary schools in Des Moines’ highest-need neighborhoods, will encourage more physical activity and better nutrition through “5-2-1-0”: Daily eating five or more fruits and vegetables, two hours or less of recreational screen time, one hour or more of physical activity and zero sugary drinks and more water and low-fat milk.
