The U.S. Small Business Administration backed $6.8 million in private loans to Central Iowa businesses in March — more than double the amount it supported in February.

The number of loans backed was 14 in each month, and 12 in January. So far this year, the SBA has backed $12.4 million in Central Iowa loans, supporting projects that are expected to create 155 jobs and retain 175.

Included in the Central Iowa data are Polk, Story, Boone, Dallas, Madison, Warren, Marion, Jasper and Marshall counties.

Statewide, the SBA backed 46 loans for $19.1 million in March, supporting 23 new and 23 existing businesses that plan to create a combined 173 jobs.

Among the larger loans in Central Iowa were:

  • $2.5 million for N&S Hospitality Inc. for a lodging project in Grimes.
  • $1.1 million for OHM Shiv Hotels Inc. in Knoxville.
  • $975,000 for FastSigns of Des Moines in Clive. 
  • $439,000 for Continental Manufacturing Chemist Inc. in Madrid.
