Girls on the Run of Central Iowa, a program of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines, announced that the organization has formed a board of directors that will be led by Colleen Doughtery as chair. “This council is growing so rapidly, and we recognized a need for additional leadership,” said Christa Vander Leest, executive director. “Girls on the Run International encouraged us to create a board of directors as we expand our footprint and have the need for more fundraising and volunteer resources.” The other 10 board members are Kelsey Arganbright, Rebecca Barloon, Rachel Kelderman, Chelsea Krause, Theresa Nemeth, Nicole Parrott, Madison Plum-Hugart, Feleecia Watkins, Jody White and Katie Alice Gibson-Overby. A physical activity-based, positive youth development program, Girls on the Run aims to inspire girls in third through eighth grade to recognize their potential and pursue their dreams. Doughtery, who works as the office manager of Midwest Growth Partners, was a founding member of a Girls on the Run council in Virginia in 2016 before she and her family moved to Iowa in 2012. “I look forward to working with the current staff and Des Moines area businesses and volunteers to support and grow this already well-functioning organization,” she said. “We want to reach as many girls as we can.” Girls on the Run of Central Iowa has served Greater Des Moines for more than a decade and has benefited more than 5,000 girls.
