Marketplace health insurance enrollments top 13.6M; 92% to receive subsidies
Tuesday, December 28, 2021 2:27 PM
Enrollment in individual health insurance plans for 2022 through Healthcare.gov and state-based marketplaces is outpacing all previous years, reaching a historic high of 13.6 million Americans so far this open-enrollment period, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
announced last week.
Among those who have enrolled, 92% will receive premium tax credits to lower their cost of coverage, according to CMS. More than 400,000 individuals to date will receive tax credits that would have been inaccessible to them before the expanded benefits enacted under the American Rescue Plan, the agency said. In the 39 states that use the federal enrollment site
Healthcare.gov
, which includes Iowa, more than 9.7 million individuals have enrolled for coverage so far, an increase of more than 900,000 from the previous all-time high in 2018. Cumulative enrollments for Iowa totaled 69,293 as of Dec. 15, according to the latest data snapshot. The Biden administration extended this year’s HealthCare.gov open enrollment period until Jan. 15 for coverage starting Feb. 1. Consumers can enroll by visiting HealthCare.gov and CuidadoDeSalud.gov or by calling 800-318-2596 to fill out an application.
