The final design for a new Kohl’s store planned at Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines was approved this week by a Des Moines board.

The approval came after the project’s design team made changes to the structure at the urging of Des Moines’ Urban Design Review Board.

The revised design includes the use of limestone stone veneer around the front entryway. A less sturdy material had previously been proposed around entry.

Also, the store’s signage was moved from north of the entryway to the south, a change that allowed additional windows to be placed in the front of the building.

I appreciate the adjustments to the front entry," board member Michelle Huggins said. "To me, the more durable material that we always advocate for … will hold up for a long time."

Kohl’s is moving from the west side of the mall to the east side, where it will face the heavily traveled Merle Hay Road. The new 55,000-square-foot store will be located on the site previously occupied by a Sears department store. The former Sears building has been razed.

The national retailer has indicated that construction of its new store will begin in September and be completed by March 2022.
