Des Moines Area Community College has received a $1,171,420 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to provide career and technical training to up to 80 low-income 18- to 24-year-olds, DMACC announced this morning. The grant is part of the Job Corps Scholars Program, a national demonstration project aimed at providing at-risk youths with job skills instruction, educational opportunities and individualized employment counseling. The three-year grant pays all tuition and fees for 80 qualified students; the DMACC program will be called the Workforce Training Academy  Young Adults Program and will be overseen by DMACC Continuing Education Department Executive Director Michael Hoffman. Enrollees can choose career and technical education programs in 10 fields, all of which can be completed in 12 months or less, DMACC said in a statement.
