Amanda Lewis will become the Des Moines school district’s director of communications, marketing and public affairs, succeeding Phil Roeder who is retiring in late June.

Lewis, currently a communications officer with the district, begins her new role on July 1. She will be paid $138,057 annually.

Prior to joining the school district’s communication department, Lewis was a reporter and news anchor for KCCI-TV in Des Moines, a role she had for over 12 years.

Lewis, a Drake University graduate, began working in the school district’s communications office in 2014. Lewis has played a large role in expanding the district’s presence on digital and social media platforms including with podcasts and video, according to a news release. She also expanded communication with multilingual families, working closely with the district’s Bilingual Family Liaisons to improve access and engagement.

During Lewis’ tenure, the communications team has earned national and statewide recognition for its work, including top honors from the Iowa School Public Relations Association for strategic campaigns, design, videography and photography.

Roeder has been the district’s communications director for the past 16 years. Prior to that, he was a member of the school board.

The Des Moines school district serves more than 30,000 students and employs nearly 5,000 people.
