April gloom wasn’t just about the weather
A majority of Iowa based companies posted April losses in their stock prices.
The Iowa Index, an unweighted average stock price of 22 Iowa-based public companies, was down 0.79 percent in April. On a year-over-year basis the index was up 0.34 percent, compared with Nasdaq’s 16.84 percent increase from a year ago. Ten of the 22 companies in the index had price gains for the month; 12 posted losses.
FBL Financial Group and Lee Enterprises Inc. were the top gainers for the month. FBL Financial was the only company to post a double-digit increase on a percentage basis in April.
NewLink Genetics Corp., KemPharm Inc. and Casey’s General Stores Inc. all posted double-digit decreases on a percentage basis in April. NewLink shares dropped early in the month after news of a failed drug trial.
