Regency Commercial Services is finishing up a new Great Western Bank office at 1347 E. Euclid Ave. in Des Moines.

When determining a location for the bank, Allen Shafer, regional president for Great Western’s Iowa and Missouri operations, who is based at the bank’s Clive branch, said, “We think that the east side of the Des Moines metro is underserved.”

He also said that the new office will tie in well with other Great Western branches in Altoona, Carlisle, Runnells and the Wal-Mart store on Southeast 14th Street.

The majority of the 2,350-square-foot building is complete.

“We are targeting to open in early May,” Shafer said.

Regency recently finished the case work, painting and installing the doors and flooring for the interior of the bank, said Scott Newbury, a senior project manager with the contractor.

Construction began in late November. With a brick face, masonry is the main component of the exterior of the one-story, full-service bank branch.

The finishing touches are being completed on the interior of the building, and paving the parking lot is the next project for the exterior.

“We were waiting for it to dry out enough to pour the parking lot,” Shafer said.

Amy Herlein will be the manager for the new Great Western office.

e300

Nelson Construction Services has broken ground and is installing the footings for a new mixed-use building, called e300, at 300 E. Grand Ave. in Des Moines. Construction began in February. The six-story building will have retail space on the ground level, and the top five floors will be apartments.

“From a scale standpoint, it’s similar to the project across the street (East Village Square Apartments),” said Jake Christensen, co-owner of Nelson Development. “It will help balance Grand Avenue and add to the retail energy in the East Village.”

With planned outdoor seating, there will be an opportunity for a restaurant within the 13,000 square feet of commercial space. Eighty to 85 apartments will make up the 70,000 square feet of residential space, for a total of 83,000 total square feet. The $12 million project is scheduled to be finished in February or March 2009.

E300, designed by OPN Architects Inc., will have “green” aspects, such as geothermal heating and use renewable and recycled materials for the interior finishes. Nelson is working with MidAmerican Energy Co. on a study to maximize energy efficiency. Transportation for the tenants could also be environmentally friendly through transit-oriented development and being located in “one of the more livable, walk-able areas in the city,” Christensen said.
