The Boulder, Colo.-based organization recently released its annual report of the U.S. craft brewing industry that includes the number of beer barrels craft brewers produce annually.
In 2025, Big Grove produced 38,929 beer barrels, a 13% increase from the 34,412 barrels it produced the previous year, according to the association. Decorah-based Toppling Goliath produced 32,502 beer barrels in 2025, 9% less than what it produced in 2024.
“This is a proud moment for our entire team and for the Iowa craft beer community,” Matt Swift, CEO and co-founder of Big Grove Brewery, said in a prepared statement. Big Grove opened its first brewhouse in 2013 in Solon. “When we started with a small barrel system in Solon, our goal was simply to make beer that mattered and to service our brewpub.
“To now be leading the state in volume, and closing in on being a Top 50 brewery nationally is a testament to the hard work of our staff and the incredible loyalty of beer drinkers across Iowa and the Midwest,” he said.
Big Grove is the 61st largest brewer in the U.S. by volume; Toppling Goliath is the 76th largest, according to the association. The country’s largest craft brewer is Pennsylvania-based D.G. Yuengling & Sons, which produced over 1.8 million beer barrels in 2025.
Big Grove began packaging its products in 2018 when it opened a 28,000-square-foot production facility in Iowa City, where it anchors the Iowa City Riverfront Crossings redevelopment project. The brewer opened a taproom in Des Moines in 2022 and Cedar Rapids in 2023. It also now has taprooms in Omaha and suburban Kansas City.
Big Grove was among the 39% of craft brewers nationally that increased production, according to the association. Overall, total craft beer production in the U.S. fell 5% in 2025 to 21.85 million beer barrels.
In Iowa, craft brewers produced 134,108 beer barrels in 2025, 7% less than the 144,424 produced in 2024, according to the association.
The association’s annual report also showed Iowa with 123 craft breweries, four fewer than in 2024.
