Blow on in to SCI for Katrina events
Whether you’re looking for something fun to do for a breakfast, lunch or dinner or even just to unwind after work, the Science Center of Iowa has scheduled some events that are sure to blow you away. The activities are designed around the Blank IMAX Dome Theater’s newest film, “Hurricane on the Bayou.” The film goes behind the scenes of Hurricane Katrina through the soul-stirring stories of four musicians, and presents a moving case for saving America’s environmental and cultural treasures.
On March 28, the final SCI After 5 event of the season from 6 to 8 p.m. will feature live New Orleans-style jazz and drinks from SCI’s cash bar, including New Orleans’ native cocktail, the Hurricane. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa Inc. will bring adoptable pets and tell stories of pet rescues in New Orleans in the wake of Katrina. Admission is $5; add a ticket to the 8:15 p.m. showing of the feature film for an additional $6.50.
Or, how about starting the day with a hot breakfast buffet? WHO-TV’s Sonya Heitshusen will speak on March 29 about her experiences in New Orleans after Katrina before the film is shown. Tickets for the Lifelong Learners’ Breakfast, which begins at 8 a.m., are $15.
Feel like some Cajun food? The next Dinner at the Dome, scheduled for Friday, March 30, will include a four-course Cajun meal with specially selected wines, followed by “Hurricane on the Bayou.” A special musical guest will help celebrate the spirit of Louisiana. WHO-TV’s Sonya Heitshusen will also speak about her post-Katrina experiences in New Orleans. The event, which usually sells out quickly, costs $55 for SCI members or $65 for non-members.
For those with just an hour to spare, a “Knowledge is Power” lunch on April 13 will provide the lunchtime crowd with a box lunch to enjoy while watching the film, plus a parking pass, all for $13.50 for members and $15 for non-members.
