“I was a nervous wreck,” she said. “I never owned my own business before, so it was all new to me.”

But with the help of close friend and co-worker Sarah Havens, Boland started Hire- Quality Solutions in September out of her home, moving into a new office in January. Now, with a few months under her belt, Boland says she’s more self-assured.

“I’ve learned a ton,” she said. “And my confidence is growing every day. I know I can do it.”

Boland said once she completed the initial work of getting the business going, a process that was more complicated than she ever imagined, she was able to put her focus back on recruiting, something she said she has a passion for.

“It’s very rewarding,” she said. “I just love what I do.”

Most companies can’t recruit effectively because the process is too time-consuming, she said.

“Human resource departments are already very busy,” she said. “They can’t call other companies and try to recruit their quality people.”

Boland said she doesn’t want to run the biggest recruiting firm in the area. She wants to run the best.

“We want to get back to the basics,” she said. “We will respect our clients, as well as go the extra mile for them. Most importantly, we don’t make promises we can’t keep.”

Hiring an employee is like welcoming a new member into the family, Boland said, so a recruiting firm must take special care to make sure a potential hire is a good fit.

“Business has been very good,” she said. “I’ve been blessed that a majority of my clients came with me to this new venture. That is probably the best endorsement we could have been given.”

Boland hopes she can double HireQuality’s four-person staff by next year, as well as move the business into a building of its own.

“I’d love to move up to Ankeny,” she said. “I live in Polk City, so it would be great to be close to home.”

The biggest lesson she has learned from starting her own business is that no one can do it alone, she said.

“My friends and family were very supportive,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it without them. Especially my father, who has been pushing me for a long time to go out on my own and do something like this.”
