Kirby Schlegel, founder and chairman of Dallas-based Schlegel Sports and owner of the Iowa Chops, has been working to reinvent the hockey club’s image since its affiliation with the Dallas Stars ended last spring. Schlegel, who purchased the American Hockey League franchise in 2004, says the Chops are developing a more local brand, bolstered by the local leadership of Steve Nitzel, the team’s president. Business Record reporter Todd Razor caught up with both men on Feb. 27 at Wells Fargo Arena, where a record 10,475 fans were in attendance for breast cancer awareness night and a 4-0 loss to the Chicago Wolves.
