For the past 20 years, the Business Record has celebrated Forty Under 40. The honor has long recognized up-and-coming business leaders and the powerful impact young professionals make in Greater Des Moines.

Joe Murphy, Class of 2019
Executive director and board secretary,
Iowa Business Council

What advice would you give to young people who want to make an impact?

Get involved in an organization you feel passionate about and work hard for the cause. And don’t just show up to the meetings. Take the extra step and volunteer your time and talent to further the mission. That will truly set you apart and pave the way for lasting impact on the areas you care the most about.

What’s one of your everyday habits that helps you be successful?

I’m up most mornings at 5 a.m. Getting up early allows me to get a fast start on the day while also providing the extra time I need to get a workout in or to power through the business news or one of the latest books I’m reading. It also allows me to plot out my day or week before the crush of meetings inevitably begin.
