Buy Fresh Buy Local to expand vegetable gardens

Greater Des Moines Buy Fresh Buy Local (BFBL) and the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Food Pantry Network are working together to help low-income Central Iowans eat more fruits and vegetables. BFBL members Rinehart Family Farm, Kitchen Collage of Des Moines, and Cultivating Compassion: The Richard Deming Foundation are providing the resources for volunteers to help grow a mile worth of vegetables that will be distributed this fall to families utilizing food pantries. The 12 DMARC food pantries and the Food Bank of Iowa will distribute the fresh vegetables. The first volunteer activity will be held April 3 from noon to 5 p.m.at Kitchen Collage, 430 E. Locust St. Volunteers will cut 150 pounds of seed potatoes to be planted at the Rinehart Family Farm near Boone.
